Cover Art

"Don't book a cover by its judge" Gandhi (probably)

The Essence

To capture emotion and meaning is the essence of art. Literature has pages, music has minutes, but covers only get a single frame, often times only for a brief moment.

Can't it just be pretty?

Of course the aesthetic cannot be ignored, but a good cover needs to be more than just pretty. The first seconds play a major role in making a decision. Do you pick up the book, do you click on the song, or do you just skim right past them? Especially in the age of fast consumerism, the first impression became even more important.

The goal is to paint a picture of what the album, song or book is about – a picture that can be understood within mere seconds. So how do you say anything meaningful that fast?

My approach

In order for the cover to reflect the meaning, I obviously need to know what the meaning is, duh. We will start with the questions behind the image, defining mood, tone, genre and content. Subsequently, I will design a few drafts with different directions for you to pick from.
