Motivation

Being a, in my humble opinion, rather fashionable person, I have always been annoyed with the lack of decent looking merchandise. A plain shirt with a small logo just doesn't do it for me, sorry.
Consequently, I had the idea to create some merchandise myself. Primarily as a fun project to expand my skills into something I am intrigued by but inexperienced with. Though the possibility of being seen and approached to make this a reality was always in the back of my mind as a motivating factor as well. Given the fact I am passionate about this topic and consume a lot of beatbox content, I would love to have merch for this interest of mine specifically.

Dropical

Winning the online World Beatbox Championship 2021 and being a high level contender for several years now, I was regularly confronted with the name Dropical. One day in the bus on my way to work, a flash of brilliance hit me. Seemingly out of nowhere, I had the idea for a brilliant logo while daydreaming. The second I got home, I captured the idea and began working on the brandmark.
Combined with my longing for some good merch, I decided to expand the logo into a full brand concept and apply it through apparel to virtually create my own fashion brand.

Concept

I am a heavy advocate for not explaining logos as they should be self explanatory. But this is a portfolio and maybe I should do just that. The brandmark combines the initial letter D in lowercase with the symbolism of a drop as well as a musical note into one simple shape.
It does not display what the brand is about, but the best logos rarely do. Picture the likes of Starbucks, Apple or Mercedes. Their logos are do not look like a coffe, a device or a car at all – and yet they are highly regarded. Sometimes it's more about creating a unique and easily identifyable brand that stands out among competitors. That's exactly the route I went with.
Following the finishing of the brandmark, I designed a custom font based on the shape language of the logo to go as a separate wordmark and circularly compliment the emblem for a more stable lockup.
